A Devon man found with a head injury at the bottom of a set of steps has passed away. Jason Godfrey, of Barnstaple, suffered an unsurvivable brain injury.

An inquest recently opened into the 49-year-old's death at Exeter Coroner's Court. During the short hearing, it was confirmed he was born in Brixham and died at Derriford Hospital on September 15.

Alison Longhorn, area coroner for Devon, said: "The circumstances are Jason was found at the bottom of steps in North Devon with extensive head injuries. He was initially taken to North Devon District Hospital then transferred to Derriford Hospital where despite best efforts he sadly died.

"There are no suspicious circumstances. Presently the medical cause of his death is part one, traumatic brain injury and, part two, alcohol dependence."

The inquest was adjourned for a full hearing to be held on a yet to be confirmed date.
