Devon pensioner dies after being struck by car while crossing road

A pensioner died after being struck by a car when he was crossing a road. An inquest has opened into the death of Peter Hill who died at Ashdowne Care Centre in Tiverton on August 27.

The short hearing at Exeter Coroner's Court heard Mr Hill was single and a retired fitter engineer. The 79-year-old was born in Truro and lived in Tiverton.

Alison Longhorn, area coroner for Devon, said: "The circumstances of Peter's death are that he was on foot crossing a single-carriageway road that was lined with parked cars. As he crossed the road he was struck by a car. Police are investigating the incident.

"Presently the medical cause of death has not yet been ascertained."

The inquest was adjourned for a full hearing to be held at a later date.
