Dexter’s revival will give the show a different ending, showrunner Clyde Phillips has revealed.

It was announced last week that the serial killer drama, which ended in 2013 after eight seasons, would be revived at Showtime for 10 new episodes.

Clyde Phillips, Dexter’s showrunner for the programme’s first four seasons, will be returning along with lead actor Michael C Hall, who played the title role.

Phillips told The Hollywood Reporter’s TV's Top 5 podcast that he and his team “basically do get start from scratch” in this new instalment.

“We want this to not be Dexter season nine,” he said. "Ten years have passed, or however many years have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage.

“Insofar as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was, and it’s a great opportunity to write a second finale for our show, and Showtime was very generous about that.”

In Dexter’s original finale, titled “Remember the Monsters?”, the serial killer ends up living in exile, his crimes still a secret. The ending was widely criticised among fans and critics alike.

Production on the new Dexter episodes is expected to begin in 2021. The show is tentatively scheduled to air in autumn of that year.
