DIAMOND couple June and John Hiscock, from Shanklin, celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary today (Thursday, October 6).

Both born on the Island, June worked at H Abel & Sons jewellers in Shanklin, and John was a local thatcher working with his father, Victor.

They met through June’s late brother, Peter, at a Christmas Party. He was friends with John and later his best man.

The pair were married at St. Saviours Church in Shanklin on October 6, 1962, by the Reverent G Harvey, and June still has a County Press clipping of the announcement of their wedding.

Their wedding reception was held at the Savoy Hotel, and they honeymooned in Bournemouth.

John went on to work for the County Council, and June ran a small guest house in Shanklin.

The couple has enjoyed a long retirement, with exotic holidays over the years, and have fantastic memories from months spent with friends travelling in the USA.

John and June’s daughter, Rachel, said her parents have been amazingly supportive to her and her brother Andrew, and continue to be amazing grandparents and great-grandparents to James, Oliver, Elliot and Jack, something that fills their time and brings them great joy.

Now in their 80s, they enjoy meals out, bingo, theatre trips, mini coach breaks and precious time with family.

John and June enjoyed a helicopter flight from Sandown airport, seeing the Island from the air for a joint 80th birthday present.

To celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary, their grandson James will take them to the Elvis tribute at Shanklin Theatre, and they will head for a romantic meal at Valentino's in Newport.

Their daughter Rachel and her family will be arriving to celebrate with them over the weekend.

The secret to their success is a good sense of humour and keeping busy.
