The sun is shining and whether you're enjoying it from the park, a UK seaside staycation or perhaps an air-bridge country, a pair of stylish, flattering shades is essential.

Finding your signature sunglasses is just as important as finding your ultimate summer dress. Just look at Gloria Steinem, Anna Wintour and Jackie Kennedy to a name few, who have become synonymous with their sunglasses of choice. They’ve all followed the golden rule of finding style that work with your face shape. Here are the key factors to take into consideration and which shades to try yourself...

The Audrey

Original Wayfarer, £176, Ray-Ban; Tortoise shell, £195, Salvatore Ferragamo; Red, £240, Saint Laurent

“It's dark and we're wearing sunglasses,” Elwood Blues says to his brother, Jake in the film, The Blues Brothers, both wearing Ray-Ban Wayfarer's. This is a critical moment in pop-culture, as it revived the now iconic sunglasses often sported by Hollywood A-listers. However, in the late '70s, they were on the brink of being discontinued by the brand, despite having another big moment in the '60s with Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

In theory the trapezoidal shaped sunglasses are a one style fits all piece, but they are best suited to oblong and heart shaped faces. If you want to soften your jaw or chin, a masculine shape like the Wayfarer will shift the focus to the centre of the face.

The Jackie

Dark havana gold, £310, Alexander McQueen; Pink and beige, £240, Zimmermann; White, £320, Linda Farrow

Oversized sunglasses are an excellent entry-level statement accessory. They are the gift that keepson  giving, whether you're hungover, trying to get someone's attention or there’s too much sun — an oversized pair of shades will save the day. But be wary not to go too big - anything that goes further than mid-cheek could be overdoing it.

Oversized shapes will flatter those with square and round faces, but it doesn’t stop there, your skin tone plays a key part. For those with light skin, warmer neutral colours and pastels are your best bet as they will look classic and tonal. Tortoiseshell, ambers, browns and greens work well for those with medium to dark skin with warm undertones.

The Gloria

Green, £195, Kaleos; Gold, £160, Projekt Produkt; Black, £620, Dior Eyewear at Browns Fashion

We’ve all watched Mrs. America by now and the number one style takeaway has to be Gloria Steinem’s Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses - even if they spend more time on top of her head rather than on her face.

As someone with a long narrow nose, I can testify that aviators are a no brainer. The majority come with metal frames which are suited to those with warm yellow undertones (if you’re confused about undertones, look at the inside of your arm, it should sway between pink and yellow). For true aviator style, make like Steinem and wear them with the arms over your hair (rather than having it tucked away).

The Anne

White oval, £320, Celine Eyewear at Matches Fashion; Black and white, £280, Loewe; Hyperforce sunglasses, £69.99, Nike at Sports Shoes

Believe it or not, the eccentric wraparound sunglasses that Princess Anne often wears are the most compatible with every face shape yet they do take some bravery to pull off (esepcially if you're wearing them a la Anne with a silk blouse or chic dress rather than sportswear). There are two avenues you can go down: minimal and chic or sporty and cool. The Princess Royal does both, but try to avoid options with more than two colours.

The Diana

Black, £270, Common Project x Moscot; Square sunglasses, £400, Chanel; Black aviators, £195, Gigi Studios

I have been searching for true black sunglasses for the last three years. Sleek, dark designs are all about an attitude, not necessarily what works best for your face — Princess Diana in her early years wore oversized gradient shades, but switched to darker Wayfarers in the '90s, a staple piece in her revenge wardrobe.
