Labour MP Diane Abbott has apologised after a photograph was circulated of her drinking a can of mojito on London public transport.
But people on social media think it’s hilarious and have said there’s no need for the shadow home secretary to apologise and even said she was deserving of “a couple of tinnies” and described her as a “legend.”
The photograph emerged of the Labour frontbencher sipping out of the £2 can of M&S mojito and Abbott apologised profusely on Twitter following its revelation.
Transport for London introduced an alcohol ban on all public transport in the capital city in 2008.
A photo of me drinking from a can of M&S mojito on the Overground has been circulated. I'm sincerely sorry for drinking on TFL.— Diane Abbott (@HackneyAbbott) April 19, 2019
However, the reaction on social media shows people either just don’t care about what say describe as something “trivial” – and some even say the mojito drinking has elevated Abbott in their eyes and made her more relatable to people.
Diane, anybody who actually has a problem with you having a tinny cocktail on a train is just looking for things to whine about. You kick back, love.— Sooz Kempner (@SoozUK) April 20, 2019
I, for one, am very impressed by this.— MissusVee (@MissusVee) April 19, 2019
Aw a very sophisticated and classy drink. I bet May knocks back the Special Brew. Well done, Diane.— Rose Shillito (@rozzleberry) April 20, 2019
Try the pornstar martini next time, it’s lovely, really compliments the district line x— Rylan Clark-Neal (@Rylan) April 20, 2019
You are my HERO. I love you. 😍— Hasan Patel 🌹 (@CorbynistaTeen) April 19, 2019
The only issue I have with this is that it was a Mojito because I think there are better cocktails to be enjoyed but you do you love x— Rachel Hawkins (@ourrachblogs) April 20, 2019
Don't apologise for being a normal human being comrade - this shambles of a Tory government would drive anyone to drink! Cheers 🌹— The Prole Star (@TheProleStar) April 19, 2019
She's apologising for something 95% of us have done and felt great about 🍻— Daniel Blake, European #GTTO #WelfareRebellion🌹 (@KateVasey) April 19, 2019
You don't need to apologise for that! Happy Holiday Weekend, Diane x— 🕊CrémantCommunarde🦁🖐 (@0Calamity) April 19, 2019
People must have very little to do with their time if they feel free to harass you with this sort of meaningless trivia.— Paul Duane (@MrPaulDuane) April 19, 2019
Come up to Scotland hun, we call that breakfast. X— Lisa Coverdale (@lisalovescheese) April 20, 2019
As long as you weren’t driving the train you have nothing to apologise for.— Gasman (@Gasman_J) April 20, 2019
However, some people have condemned the MP for her rule-breaking on the overground.
The policy is there to protect staff who end up having to deal with drunk, abusive passengers.— Meagan Mogg (@MeaganMogg) April 20, 2019
We all know Diane wouldn't abuse transport staff, but every day bus and rail workers face verbal and physical assaults from drunks up and down the country. The few ruin it for the many.
Call me old-fashioned but I really expect better of Diane Abbott. Those defending her should consider where society would be if we all decided to flout the law. TfL introduced an alcohol ban for a reason and everyone, including politicians, should obey it.https://t.co/8xlAT9eun2— Trevor Warner (@trevorw1953) April 20, 2019
