Dick Van Dyke, 97, ordered to retake driving test after crash
Dick Van Dyke has reportedly been ordered to retake his driving test aged 97 after crashing his Lexus into a Malibu gate.
The actor was said to have lost control of the wheel when the streets were slick from the rainstorms California experienced earlier this month.
The Hollywood veteran, known for various TV and film roles including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins, told police his car slid on the wet roads and slammed into a gate.
The accident was first reported by the gossip website TMZ, which said Mr Van Dyke was bleeding from the nose and mouth and might have suffered a concussion.
Paramedics treated him at the scene and he was then brought home by a friend. The elderly actor reportedly had no interest in being examined in a hospital.
Local law enforcement has since confirmed the 97-year-old was involved in a single-car, minor collision on March 15 in Malibu.
Police officers have said drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be involved in the accident.
However, it has been reported that police submitted documents to the Department of Motor Vehicles for Van Dyke to retake his driving test, because of his age.
Mr Van Dyke’s Hollywood career spans seven decades across film, TV and theatre. He has five Emmys, a Tony, a Grammy and a Bafta.
In 2021, he revealed how he stays in shape by doing sit-ups for a US morning TV show from his Malibu home.
“All you old guys out there, listen to me, I’m telling you. You can keep going for - I’m still dancing and singing,” he said.
