EastEnders spinoff Kat and Alfie: Redwater has got off to a decent start in the ratings, bringing in 4.19 million viewers for its first episode.

Kat and Alfie's long-awaited six-part drama finally kicked off last night (May 18), with an almost identical figure to Thursday's EastEnders episode – managing to keep almost all of that audience.

Thursday's visit to Walford drew in 4.20 million viewers, with 4.19 million staying tuned to catch up with Kat and Alfie in Redwater straight after. The show's debut episode aired to 495,000 in Ireland on Sunday (May 14).

Emmerdale was the top soap of the day yesterday with 5.20 million tuning in for its hour-long episode, which started at 7pm and finished in time for Redwater's debut.

However, it's worth noting that EastEnders' clash with the second part of Emmerdale last night is likely to have impacted Redwater's figures too, as it would have meant that some EastEnders viewers weren't already watching BBC at the time.

Past clashes between EastEnders and Emmerdale have often dented audience figures for both shows as fans face divided loyalties over which one to watch live.

Let's also not forget that these ratings are purely based on the amount of viewers watching the shows as they air live on TV, and doesn't take into account iPlayer catch-up figures – which are likely to boost numbers.

Next week is when things get really interesting though, as Redwater faces a tricky scheduling clash against Emmerdale – with both shows airing at 8pm going forwards.

Redwater producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins actually addressed the issue in a recent interview, saying that he thinks the new drama will give Emmerdale some healthy competition, given its success lately.

Kat and Alfie: Redwater airs Thursdays at 8pm on BBC One.
