Costco just might be the holy grail of megastores. Aside from all the free samples, it's home to excellent party supplies, discount Universal tickets, and now, your new car. The Costco Auto Program has been around since 1989, operating under the radar but getting positive reviews, especially for the way it can take some of the stress out of car shopping. The program doesn't handle everything for you, so you'll still want to be prepared and know exactly what kind of car you want to buy, but utilizing your membership will at least help get you a fair deal. Here's what you need to know before you drive into the sunset with your new wheels.

How Does It Work?

You can't swap your car any time you roll into their parking lot looking for 27 pounds of mac and cheese. Instead, the program negotiates deals and discounts with local dealerships to eliminate the haggling aspect of car buying. They train members of participating dealerships in customer service and customer policy, ensuring a no-strings-attached shopping experience.

With the Costco Auto Program, the company is essentially arranging the best local price, at an average of $1000 in savings. It also makes sure you are taking advantage of every available manufacturer incentive program in addition to the Costco discount. If you're not happy with the deal you're offered you are able to ask for more documentation, file a complaint, or request a different dealership through the Costco Member Advocacy Group.

What If I Want a Specialty Car?

The Costco Auto Program is all-inclusive, meaning you don't need to buy a brand-new 2019 or 2020 model off the lot (unless you want to). The program works for used cars, certified pre-owned cars, RVs, and even cars outfitted for disabled drivers and passengers. Since partnerships are negotiated locally instead of nationally, not all deals are available in every location.

Where Does Costco Come In?

You will be doing the actual purchasing at a Costco-partnered dealership. The megastore arranges the deal and pairs you with a dealership in your area that participates in the program. Costco also monitors sales to make sure you're receiving the lowest rate and offer fact-checking services to make sure the numbers add up to a Costco-approved sale.

After you purchase your new ride, Costco Auto Program offers 15 percent on parts and services by partnering with local mechanics and garages. In addition to offering a discount to your nearby tire rotation, the program offers limited specials with national companies, such as discounted rates on certain car brands and services. Though it's not part of the Costco Auto Program, Costco members can also get deals on tires at their warehouses and discounts for glass replacement.

These partnerships and deals change regularly, so keep refreshing their website to find the perfect deal for you. You can check deals and local partners at Costco Auto.
