How did my MP vote for the Winter Fuel Allowance motion? Full list of every MP's vote
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has seen off a backbench rebellion over plans to cut the winter fuel allowance but the Government’s majority fell to 120. MPs voted 348 to 228 against the Tory motion for the controversial policy to be blocked.
It is not immediately clear how many actively chose to abstain as it will only show who voted in favour, against and who did not record a vote. For example, some may not record a vote because they were unable to attend due to other commitments. The Government’s working majority is 167.
The division list showed one Labour MP, Jon Trickett (Normanton and Hemsworth), supported the Conservation motion while no vote was recorded for 53 Labour MPs, although this does not automatically equate to an abstention for each MP as they may have received permission to miss a vote. Labour announced the controversial scheme last month - which means the previously universal benefit will be means-tested from now on.

People in England and Wales not in receipt of pension credit or other means-tested benefits will lose out under the Government’s policy. It is expected to reduce the number of pensioners in receipt of the up to £300 payment by 10 million, from 11.4 million to 1.5 million, saving around £1.4 billion this year.
Scrapping the winter fuel allowance for some pensioners is “simply wrong”, the Liberal Democrats have said. The party’s spokesperson on work and pensions, Wendy Chamberlain, said: “We on these benches accept that the new Government has been left with an unenviable task of re-building our economy after the mess left by the previous government, and nobody is disputing that years of Conservative mismanagement have left the public finances in crisis.
“But this cut is simply wrong, it is wrong to strip support from many of the poorest pensioners, just as energy bills are set to rise again, it is wrong to force vulnerable elderly people to make that choice between heating and eating this winter, and it is the wrong answer to the challenges that we face.”
Tory former minister Esther McVey claimed that Labour has “declared war on pensioners”, as she called for an impact assessment on the Government’s plans to restrict winter fuel payments.
She told the Commons: “The public knows this decision to rob millions of pensioners of their winter fuel allowance – for which the Government has no mandate – has nothing to do with economics, and everything to do with cynical political calculations, and the haste with which it is being done is breathtaking.”
Work and Pensions Minister Emma Reynolds, replying to a Westminster Hall debate, said the Government is taking the decision to means-test the payment due to a “£22 billion black hole” in this year’s public finances “left by the previous government”.
She said: “In protecting the poorest pensioners on the lowest incomes and with the greatest need, it is the right decision given the tough choices that we face. Just to be very, very clear, I have spoken to a number of (MPs) present about the Government’s decision and there actually is fairly widespread agreement that this benefit should not be universal.
“There are plenty of very wealthy pensioners who are getting transfers of £200, or £300 if they’re over 80, into their bank account and who don’t need it, so it’s right that we target this support on the poorest pensioners.”
Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall accused the Conservatives of “faux outrage” over the winter fuel payment. The minister said: “I would say to the faux outrage of members opposite, the faux outrage of members opposite who left 880,000 pensioners, the very poorest, not getting the pension credit they’re entitled to.
“And I would urge all honourable members to work with us and their local councils to make sure pensioners get the money they’re entitled to.”
She also told the Commons: “As my right honourable friend the Chancellor (Rachel Reeves) and the Prime Minister (Sir Keir Starmer) have said, this is not a decision we wanted or expected to make, but when we promised we would be responsible with taxpayers’ money, we meant it, because we know what happens when members opposite played fast and loose with the public finances. Working people and pensioners on fixed incomes paying the price with soaring interest rates, mortgages and inflation.”
