Captain Marvel's first trailer has finally arrived, and while you were going nuts for her red and blue costume and the fade that turns 'her' into 'a hero', you may have missed a sneaky Easter egg hidden on the accompanying poster.

Brie Larson's Carol Danvers stands front and centre, framed by the doors of an air hanger (a nod to her US Air Force past)... but what's that over of the left edge of the picture?

Eagle-eyed fans have noted that it appears to be the hindquarters of a cat.

Now, everyone knows the internet is made of cats, but there's more to this than a generic feline fascination.

In the comics, Carol has a cat called Chewie – so named for our hero's love of Star Wars – who has accompanied Captain Marvel as she travels the galaxy.

Carol initially thought that her pet was an ordinary feline, but later learned that she's not really a cat but a Flerken. Flerkens are cat-like aliens with access to pocket dimensions, which, in Chewie's case, she fills with things like a huge clutch of her eggs and a mouthful of terrifying tentacles.

Chewie was first introduced in the 2006 comic Giant-Size Ms Marvel #1 (back when Carol went by the codename 'Ms Marvel'), and played a bigger role when Captain Marvel crossed paths with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Rocket Racoon tried to kill the animal, after which Chewie revealed her immense and terrifying powers.

A picture posted from a Marvel event celebrating Captain Marvel indicates that the cat in the movie (if it does indeed appear) will be called Goose – possibly a reference to the Top Gun character. Whether her alien background will also change remains to be seen.

Captain Marvel will be released on March 8, 2019 in the UK and US.
