Die Hard Director Facing Jail For Lying To FBI

The director of Die Hard and Predator faces a year in jail after losing his bid to have the US Supreme Court review a guilty plea and prison sentence for perjury and lying to the FBI.

John McTiernan, who also directed The Hunt For Red October, could now start his prison sentence after months of appeals.

Prosecutors accused the 62-year-old of lying about hiring former private investigator Anthony Pellicano, who represented many Hollywood stars, to wiretap a film producer.

McTiernan pleaded guilty in 2006 after the FBI obtained a recording in which the men discussed the wiretap, but later withdrew his guilty plea after hiring a new lawyer.

He was then indicted for a second time and, after failing to suppress the recording, entered a conditional guilty plea allowing him to appeal.

He was sentenced to 12 months in prison in October 2010 after pleading guilty to two counts of making false statements to the FBI and one count of perjury for lying to a federal judge while trying to withdraw a guilty plea.

The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals rejected that appeal last August.

The Supreme Court declined to consider whether the lower courts erred in refusing to suppress the recording.
