Difficult maths puzzle leaves '99%' of people baffled – see if you can solve it

Reckon you're a maths whizz? See if you can solve this tricky puzzle.

While many of us might not miss maths problems from school, others among us love a good challenge, and what better way than putting our algebra skills to the test.

If you fancy giving this puzzle a go, be warned as it is said "99%" of people who try it aren't able to come up with the right answer within the time limit. Can you do it? The puzzle was shared on TikTok by the account IQ Test US, and simple at first. The brain teaser first tells you that A+A = 2, and that A+B = 3. Using that information, you then have to work out a longer sum, which is: "A + B x 2 = ?"

Now, what makes the puzzle even harder is the TikTok video claims that you only have two seconds to solve it, and that's why 99% of people who give it a go are unable to do so. If you think you're a maths genius then you can try to complete it in the time limit, but we'll give you a pass as long as you still get it right no matter what the time on the clock is.

With the stress of the time limit removed, can you solve the equation? You'll need to first work out what the value of A and B is, so that you can fill in the equation with numbers instead of letters. But your job doesn't stop there, as there's actually a special trick to working out the sum - and if you do it wrong, you'll get an incorrect answer.

If you worked out the easy sums correctly, you'll know that A is 1 and B is 2, making the final sum "1 + 2 x 2 = ?". Now, there are two potential ways of working this out, but only one is the "correct" way and will lead you to the right answer. Working out the sum from left to right gives you six as the answer, but that isn't right.

The rules of BIDMAS (also known as PEMDAS or BODMAS, depending on where you went to school) govern the way that equations are worked out. Brackets come first, indices (like square roots or powers) second, division and multiplication third, and addition and subtraction last.

Because of this rule, you have to do 2 x 2 first and then add the one, giving you five as the correct answer.
