The Diplomat season 2: All you need to knowNetflix

The Diplomat season two is officially happening on Netflix, which is a great thing after that season one finale.

The political drama's first season was a huge hit. It follows career diplomat Kate Wyler as she adjusts to her new high-profile job as a UK ambassador in the midst of an international crisis, all while trying to survive her stormy marriage to fellow career diplomat Hal.

Featuring a cast that includes Cocaine Bear's Keri Russell, Bank of Dave's Rory Kinnear and Old's Rufus Sewell, the new show has managed to dethrone fellow political drama The Night Agent from its long-standing number-one spot in Netflix's global top 10.

Now that we know Kate's coming back for more, here's everything you need to know about The Diplomat season two.

The Diplomat season 2 potential release date: When can we expect The Diplomat season 2?

As mentioned above, The Diplomat has been officially renewed for season two on Netflix, although we're still waiting for a confirmed release date.

This comes as no surprise given the show was viewed for more than 57.48 million hours during its first weekend of release last month, meaning it was ranked number one among Netflix's English-language series in the US, and ranked in the top 10 in 86 other countries.

Netflix's vice president of drama series, Jinny Howe, said in a statement: "Fans around the world are loving every minute of The Diplomat's gripping and propulsive drama, and embracing Keri Russell's powerful performance as Kate Wyler.

"After that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we can't wait for them to see what the amazing visionary team of Debora Cahn, Janice Williams and Keri Russell have in store for Season 2."

Series creator and showrunner Deborah Cahn added: "We had such a great time making The Diplomat, it's a thrill to see how much people are enjoying it. We're so glad we get to do it again!"

Despite the show's promise, the wait for that announcement was surely a tough one for fans given Netflix's habit of cancelling shows.

However, it was telling that Cahn signed an overall deal with the streaming giant, and she told Elle she typically looks for shows that can run for multiple seasons.

"I have been fortunate in my life to work on a lot of long-running series, so I think that's how I think," she said. "I look for stories that can go on for a long time because, for me, the excitement of being able to go in really deep with characters you already know and you have a relationship with is fantastic."

Hopefully she's already planned out season two, so we can potentially see it in 2024, but watch this space for now.

The Diplomat season 2 cast: Who will be coming back for The Diplomat season 2?

It's been confirmed that Keri Russell will reprise her role as Kate Wyler (you can't have The Diplomat without the diplomat, after all), but who will be joining her?

While it's not been confirmed yet, we would also expect to see David Gyasi back as Austin Dennison, as well as Ali Ahn as Eidra Graham and Rory Kinnear as Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge.

The following cast members are also likely to return for season two:

• Miguel Sandoval as Miguel Ganon
• Nana Mensah as Billie Appiah
• Michael McKean as US President William Rayburn

The fates of Kate's husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) and Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh) are a little more uncertain, given they were both within range of Conservative MP Merritt Grove's (Simon Chandler) car exploding.

We see but don't hear the French police inform Kate of the news in Paris. Are Hal and Stuart dead or just injured?

If we're really lucky, we'll get a The Americans reunion – as Keri Russell has already started to try to get Matthew Rhys on the show (via Screenrant).

"He’s so fun to work with. I would love to. If The Diplomat gets a second season, maybe we can lure him our way. In fact, when we were filming last summer, I asked him, “Don’t you want [series creator] Debora [Cahn] to write something for you? What would you do?” Matthew likes tough guys because I think, you know, he’s an actor and wears makeup for a living, so when I said, 'What do you want to play?' He said some kind of army or military soldier. So you never know."

In the explosive season one finale, Kate and Austin deduce that Trowbridge ordered the attack on HMS Courageous and that he hired the Russian Lenkov Group to kill his own men.

We then watch as Grove's car explodes before the police inform Kate of the news and the credits roll.

Now that season two has gotten the thumbs up, it looks like we'll finally find out if Hal and Stuart were killed by the blast or if they're in hospital recovering.

Meanwhile, Kate and Austin will likely be building a case against Trowbridge, and the White House's efforts to swear Kate in as vice president are sure to continue.
