In news sure to generate cheers from '90s kids, Disney is thinking about putting the Mighty Ducks back on the ice!

The House of Mouse is in the early stages of developing a live-action TV series based on the three sports classics released in cinemas throughout the 1990s, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This potential revival came about when Disney was approached by original Mighty Ducks writer Steven Brill and co-producer Jordan Kerner, both of whom will stay involved with developing the project.

At this early stage, it's not clear yet whether the Mighty Ducks series would be a reboot or sequel, or if the team's on-screen coach Emilio Estevez will be involved at all.

Should the project move forward, Disney's in-house production company ABC Signature Studios will reportedly shop the series to channels and streaming outlets, with a home on Disney's upcoming US streaming service also possible.

This won't actually be the first time the Ducks have ventured onto the small screen. An animated spin-off, centred around actual hockey-playing ducks rather than children, aired in 1996 on ABC.

The original Mighty Ducks movies made a star of its young lead Joshua Jackson, who later successfully transitioned into teen and later adult stardom as Pacey on Dawson's Creek.

There has been renewed talk about reinventing the Mighty Ducks franchise capacity in recent years, with producer Jordan Kerner previously hinting at a possible fourth feature film back in 2014.

That project sadly never came to pass, but it's looking like the Ducks may have one more slapshot at the Stanley Cup (if kids are allowed to play for the Stanley Cup).
