Disney Channel's Andi Mack isn't only notable for having the channel's first-ever majority Asian-American family.

The new show from Lizzie McGuire showrunner Terri Minsky centres on a shy 12-year-old who discovers a life-changing secret on her 13th birthday (as found out at the end of its pilot episode).

As her older and cooler sister Bex returned home for Andi's birthday, it was revealed that Bex is actually Andi's mother and not her sister.

The teen pregnancy twist was so bold that Minsky didn't even think it would get approved.

"The Disney Channel called to say, 'Listen, we're thinking we need to come up with something different and you did it for us before, do you have anything?'," she told Seventeen.com.

"I was kind of thinking, 'Well, yeah'. But, in like a million years, I really didn't expect them to go for it."

Minsky added that the story was inspired by Jack Nicholson finding out his sister was his mother, and said that she was "so glad" Disney Channel was open to the show's idea.

"Obviously I didn't come to them with drugs and alcohol problems, but every single thing we've wanted to do - they've been like, 'OK', so it's been a great experience," she added.

And if you want to see Disney tackle teen pregnancy, Andi Mack starts on the Disney Channel in the UK on April 7.
