A video has emerged of an iPhone being retrieved from the bottom of a freezing cold river — and still working.

Apple says the new iPhone 7 is waterproof up to a metre of water, but for no longer than 30 minutes.

However, after 13 hours on the bed of the nearly frozen river, the phone appears to have survived.

The footage, which has not been verified, was posted online in Russia, after a fisherman dropped the device into the water.

Web user emfedor 1983, from Yakutia, said: “A friend called me today and asked to help him get an iPhone from the bottom of the river.

“It just happened that his new iPhone 7 Plus fell into the water when he was fishing at night.”

The recovery required a serious operation — with the friend donning a wetsuit and diving in to retrieve the phone.

He said that it had been on 35 percent battery when lost and added: “When I got it out, the battery power was 19 percent, despite the fact that the water was 4 degrees.”

Apple’s iPhone 7 was generally well received by critics, though some complained about the removal of the headphone jack, which means users must rely on Bluetooth headphones to listen to music.

Journalist and web users alike having been attempting to test the handset’s waterproof credentials in a range of inventive ways.

One tabloid writer deliberately dropped the phone into a toilet bowl, then fished it out and successfully took a call on it.
