Consumer confidence is holding up despite the “lively political backdrop”, the boss of Dixons Carphone said on Wednesday as he unveiled forecast-beating fourth-quarter sales.

Seb James said British shoppers continue “to be active in the market” but remain discerning about price and service.

“We anticipate no let-up in their — very rational — view that price and service are critical factors in deciding where to shop.”

Sales from stores open for more than a year rose 2% in the 16 weeks to April 29, topping expectations for a 0.9% increase.

UK and Ireland sales were also up 2% as electricals offset a tough mobile phones market, marred by a five-week delay to the release of the Samsung S8 and a trend towards SIM-only contracts.

For its full year, group same-store sales were up 4%. The shares added 13.4p to 340p.

James said Dixons will ramp its same-day mobile phones repair service, aiming to take a “big chunk” of the market.
