A man's DIY living room transformation initially won the admiration of the public, but a detail soon had hearts sinking.

A Reddit user by the name of BurnItNow shared their "most difficult" home renovation project to date on the website's DIY forum, expressing pride in the outcome. They posted: "My wife wanted built in's in our living room. We have a recessed area where our TV goes."

Despite the impressive DIY efforts that involved installing new cabinets and a television, the final reveal has left the Reddit community both wowed and somewhat dismayed. The DIY enthusiast encountered "three big troubles" during the construction, and while his skills were praised, the end result was not without its flaws.

In a detailed account, he explained: "Three big troubles I ran into a 1. She wanted the ceiling last raises higher... -__- 2. The math didn't work out on any combination of premade cabinets so I had to learn to build the entire cabinet custom. And 3. She wanted full inlay cabinet doors.... So they had to be perfect."

He concluded: "Overall I worked on this project most weekends since the end of March. After finishing up, There are a few things I would have done differently but I'm happy with the results!". While many Reddit users lavished praise on the project, hoping their own living rooms could match up, the most upvoted comment lamented the decision to paint over the oak cabinets.

One user commented: "Cabinetry looks neat! Personally not a fan of the all black, but it probably fits the rest of the decor and you'll break up the blackness with more objects and stuff anyway. It matches with your dog! ".

In less favourable opinions, another said: "Yeah, my heart sank when I saw the oak was painted. It was beautiful." They added: "Now that it's all black it's still nicely built but it's indistinguishable from cheap particleboard laminated stuff. Not personally a fan. But if the wife is happy that's a priority! ".
