Hundreds rallied in support of Novak Djokovic, the world’s top-ranked tennis player, outside Serbia’s parliament in Belgrade on January 6, after he was denied entry to Australia when he landed in Melbourne the day before.
Djokovic was due to compete in the Australian Open, scheduled to start on January 17, but Australian Border Police rejected his exemption from COVID-19 vaccination rules and canceled his visa, reports said.
The tennis player’s father, Srdjan Djokovic, who had previously called his son “a leader of the free world,” addressed the crowd in Belgrade using a megaphone and described his son’s situation as a major diplomatic and sporting scandal, Serbian media reported.
