We're already traumatised by the very thought of Peter Capaldi leaving Doctor Who, but series boss Steven Moffat has promised that the actor's final episode will be... funny?

Following up on previous comments describing this year's Christmas special as "a tale of redemption and hope", Moffat told Doctor Who Magazine that the festive episode will be "funny and lively".

"The one thing I have to say is, it's Christmas Day, we're gonna keep it funny, and we're gonna keep it lively, as well as sad," DoctorWho.TV quotes the showrunner as saying.

"If we cry, [the audience] won't. We want them to cry. So Doctor Who will laugh bravely into that good night."

Sounds like Capaldi's incarnation will go out optimistic – which, fingers crossed, means his regeneration won't totally destroy us.

Recalling Capaldi's decision to leave the series, Moffat recently revealed: "He took a long time, it was quite a few months deciding what to do.

"I was kind of hoping he'd stay on because there's only so much emotional trauma you can bear and I've had three versions of my childhood hero hand in their resignation to me and there's no specific therapy for that!

"That's really quite difficult. It's like Santa Claus quitting in front of you!"

Doctor Who will wrap up series 10 with 'The Doctor Falls' this Saturday at 6.30pm on BBC One.

Doctor Who Magazine issue 514 is available from June 29, 2017.
