Doctor Who 2023 specials spoilers follow.

Doctor Who director Rachel Talalay has confirmed the return of another classic monster for the 60th anniversary.

The upcoming specials featuring David Tennant as the 14th Doctor have already been confirmed to feature the cuddly monster Beep the Meep, plus Neil Patrick Harris is speculated to be playing the Celestial Toymaker.

Doctor Who Magazine has now revealed that these specials will also feature the Wrarth Warriors, an insectoid police force that originally appeared in Doctor Who spin-off comic story 'Doctor Who and the Star Beast'.

In speaking to the magazine, Talalay revealed that nobody was more excited to see these massive creatures on set than Doctor Who super-fan David Tennant.

"There are these eight-foot-tall monsters on stilts, in massive plastic suits, who couldn’t see a thing and could barely stand up... so a classic Doctor Who situation," the filmmaker said.

"When David comes along and says he wants a photograph with them. And he says, 'That smell – that slightly rubbery smell is exactly everything I remember!' And I just thought, 'It’s amazing that this is my job.'"

The inclusion of the Wrarth Warriors in writer Russell T Davies' special episodes may provide a hint about the storyline, as they are closely tied to the species known as the Meeps.

Beep the Meep has already been seen in the trailers and may appear to be a cuddly sidekick, but he's been portrayed in spin-off media as a megalomaniac bent on universal domination.

The Wrarth Warriors were genetically engineered from the most fearsome species of their universe specifically to go to war with the Meeps, so they're likely to be after Beep in these TV specials.

Doctor Who fans will welcome the return of director Talalay as well, as she has previously directed classic episodes such as 'Heaven Sent' / 'Hell Bent' as well as Matt Smith's swansong in 'Twice Upon a Time'.

These 60th-anniversary specials will be bringing back Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, alongside Heartstopper's Yasmin Finney as a new Rose and the eventual debut of Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th Doctor.

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max. Classic Doctor Who streams on BritBox in the UK.
