Doctor Foster, Peter Kay's Car Share, I'm a Celebrity and Broadchurch walked away as major winners at the National Television Awards 2018 on Tuesday (January 23).

The coveted TV trophies were handed out by presenter Dermot O'Leary and a star-studded line-up of celebrities including Suranne Jones, Ioan Gruffudd and the next Doctor Jodie Whittaker at the O2 Arena.

Suranne pulled double duty, as she was also awarded the Drama Performance prize by the aforementioned Jodie Whittaker for her powerhouse performance in Doctor Foster.

"It was a risk to make a second [series] because you loved the first so much, and we didn't want to disappoint you," Suranne said in her acceptance speech. "This means so much, that you enjoyed it."

Doctor Foster's winning ways continued later in the evening, when it won out over Liar, Casualty, Call the Midwife and Game of Thrones to be named the year's top Drama Programme.

Emmerdale repeated its win for Serial Drama for the second year running, while Coronation Street's Lucy Fallon was visibly overwhelmed when accepting the Serial Drama Performance prize for her groundbreaking child grooming storyline.

The night wasn't a total loss for EastEnders either. Danny Walters scooped the Newcomer Award against tough competition from Rob Mallard (Coronation Street), Nathan Morris (Hollyoaks) and Ned Porteous (Emmerdale).

In the reality categories I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here topped last summer's telly phenomenon Love Island for a victory in the Challenge Show category.

Ever the jokester, David Walliams thanked voters in his own TV Judge Award acceptance speech for propelling him to success over his Britain's Got Talent co-star Simon Cowell. With the new series of BGT just around the corner, we're certain this isn't the last we'll hear of the Cowell snub.

Rounding out the night, Ant & Dec were jointly named the best TV Presenter for the 17th straight year, after a traffic jam delayed their arrival at the NTAs until after the show had officially started.

"It's been quite a 12 months so this really, really means a lot," Ant said in his acceptance speech. "Thank you to all of you for your support. It's helped me get through. Thanks to you, little guy [Dec]."
