A partial spin-off of Doctor Foster (in that both series are written by Mike Bartlett), Life sees Hamilton reprise the role of Anna, although this time she's called Belle.
It's because of the change of name that Hamilton didn't realise at first that she was playing the exact same character again – but all was eventually explained to her.
"I just thought this is a wonderful character," Hamilton told Radio Times, as she recalled that she thought Belle seemed quite similar to Anna.
"I mentioned this in an email to Mike [Bartlett] and he wrote back saying: 'It is Anna. She’s calling herself Belle, as in Anna-Belle.' I was very slow on the uptake."
Set in Manchester, Life follows the stories of residents in a large house divided into four flats, whose lives eventually become entwined.
Having learned of her husband's infidelity at the end of Doctor Foster, Anna is now choosing to call herself Belle as she attempts to start a new life.
"Mike is brilliant at sending his characters the worst challenge possible," said Hamilton. "Mine is a control freak and suddenly she’s in a situation she cannot control and that makes for very good drama."
Bartlett explained why he was so keen to continue Anna's story, saying: "I was desperate to work with Victoria more on screen not just as a supporting actor but as a lead, which I know she can be. She is one of this country’s leading stage actors."
Life also stars Alison Steadman, Peter Davison, Adrian Lester, Adam James and Rachael Stirling.
BBC One will be airing the six-part series this autumn.
