One in two people in the world have suffered from dandruff at some point in their lives. With temperatures predicted to take a nosedive next week, experts are warning how this change in temperature can lead to a flare-up for your scalp.

Dr Balwi, hair surgeon at hair transplant clinic Elithair, has explained why the cold weather can cause dandruff and pose a risk to scalp and hair health. He has also advised on best practices if you’re suffering from dandruff, including the symptoms to look out for as well as the prevention methods and treatment options.

Can the cold weather cause a dry scalp and dandruff?

Dr Balwi said: "Yes, in winter the scalp often becomes more prone to dryness. Cold temperatures, combined with the increased use of central heating reduce humidity levels and dry out the air.

"These combined factors cause damage to the scalp's protective layer, stripping it of natural moisture and oils. As a result, the scalp may lose hydration, leading to dryness, itchiness, and irritation, often visible through white patches or flakes.

"In addition, dandruff is typically caused by an overproduction of yeast. Dry air can also cause the scalp to produce more oil, which feeds the yeast that causes dandruff. While the sun's UV light can help eliminate yeast buildup, the hair and scalp can become more from a lack of winter sun."

How important is scalp care for hair growth?

Dr Balwi said: "Hair follicles and the scalp must be healthy and maintained for optimum hair growth. Hair strands grow from the root of the hair follicle. Formed by cells multiplying and fed by blood vessels in the scalp, hairs are then pushed up through the skin as it grows. Follicles that are full of sebum or blocked by dead skin, dandruff or infection will impact the quality of hair growth."

What are the symptoms of scalp infections and dandruff in winter?

Dr Balwi said the symptoms of scalp and hair follicle infections varied depending on the type and severity of the infection. These are some of the most common symptoms that indicate scalp infections:

  • Redness and inflammation: Affected areas may become red, swollen, and tender to the touch.

  • Itching and discomfort: Itching is a common symptom of both bacterial and fungal infections as well as dandruff.

  • Hair loss: Infections can damage hair follicles, leading to temporary or permanent hair loss in the affected areas.

  • Scaly patches: Fungal infections and dandruff regularly cause scaly, flaky patches on the scalp.

  • Pustules and blisters: Bacterial infections like folliculitis can result in pustules (pus-filled bumps) or blisters.

  • Pain: Viral infections such as shingles can cause significant pain and discomfort

How to treat dandruff-prone hair this winter

Trial specialist hair treatments and shampoos

Depending on the cause of your dandruff, your doctor may recommend specific products to treat the irritation. Some of these can only be prescribed due to their strength. For dandruff, it’s usually recommended to try a targeted dandruff shampoo which has selenium or zinc pyrithione. This is due to their properties that control your body’s production of yeast.

Top tip: make sure to rinse your hair thoroughly after shampooing to remove any product residue.

Use a scalp massager

Attention needs to be paid not only to the hair but also to the scalp to lift the flaky buildup. Consider a scalp massage or deep conditioning treatment as part of your weekly scalp and hair care routine.

Consider how often you’re styling or washing your hair

Avoid using too much heat on your hair and excessive brushing, tugging and styling. Washing your hair too often and using regular over-the-counter products can dry it out and make it shed more. This, alongside the weight of water and the stress from towel-drying and brushing, can cause damage to your scalp so leaving your hair for a while between washes can be beneficial.

Think about external factors

Maintaining a healthy diet and increasing your nutrient intake is important to stimulating hair growth and maintaining healthy hair follicles. Relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing can also be beneficial to reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing. Also, ensure you get enough sleep to allow your body to regenerate and strengthen your immune system.
