We thought Doctor Who's season 10 opener was a pretty terrific ride, but after hearing about this incredible deleted scene, we're kind of disappointed it didn't make the final cut.

Season 10's 'The Pilot' introduced fans to Pearl Mackie as the Doctor's latest "charming" – and reassuringly real – companion Bill, as well as her tragic love story with Heather.

And it's Bill and Heather that this "lovely" deleted scene is all about, as the episode's director Lawrence Gough explained to Den of Geek.

"There was a whole sequence in the bar scene, where Heather and Bill first meet, and we spin around them," he said.

"When we spun around them, what was originally revealed was that the Doctor was on stage playing guitar. It's a great sequence, it was lovely to shoot."

Explaining that the Doctor's "heavy metal" rendition of 'Clara's Theme' was meant to be "drawing" Bill and Heather together, Lawrence added: "It's all part of that time and space montage."

Sadly, despite the success of the scene, the moment was eventually cut to speed up Bill and Heather's montage, and in the world of telly, you have to get ruthless.

"Everyone was really into it, as if you were in a club watching a band," Lawrence explained. "In the edit, though, we wanted that bit to be montage-y and quite pacey, so it was one of those things that had to go."

Here's hoping it makes the DVD extras. We need to see Peter Capaldi playing heavy metal guitar before he regenerates if it's the last thing we do.

Doctor Who continues this Saturday (April 29) with 'Thin Ice' on BBC One at 7:20pm.
