A doctor has shared a “miracle” method for reportedly curing a sore code overnight.

With the winter weather well underway, many people are suffering with associated symptoms like colds, chesty coughs, the flu or a sore throat. According to the NHS, most sore throats are nothing to worry about and typically “get better by themselves within a week”.

But often, people scour social media looking for tips and tricks to help ease unwanted symptoms faster. Like many healthcare professionals and experts, Dr Alan Mandell has taken to sharing his advice and guidance to the masses online.

In one popular TikTok video, Dr Mandell, who is also a south Florida chiropractor, shared a at home, medicine-free approach to “curing” a sore throat while you sleep. Speaking directly to the camera, he said: “Looking to kill a sore throat overnight?

“Take a warm glass of water, take half a teaspoon of salt, start gargling several times before you go to bed. This will kill the bacteria as well as that mucus. You’ll see miracles - try it.”

People were keen to share their thoughts in the comments section. One person said: “Guys I just woke up with a sore throat, I’m going to do this before and after school and then at night, I hope it works”. In a follow up comment, they added: “It actually worked”.

But another said: “It helps, but absolutely doesn’t NOT cure it in one night”. Someone else commented: “I just did this and it loosened up mucus I didn’t know was in there.”

Another, keen to give it a try, said: “I’m doing this tonight! I was about ready to give up, my throat hurts so bad, it feels so swollen”.

Somebody else suggested: “I do lemon and honey. Grandma’s remedy”. Others reported struggling with the salt water, with some saying it made them feel sick and others claiming to have vomited.

The NHS does support a salt water throat rinse though, as well as other easy to implement remedies. To help soothe a sore throat and shorten how long it lasts, the NHS advises gargling with warm salty water, as per Dr Mendall’s suggestion, though it does warn this is not something children should try.

Sufferers are also advised to drink plenty of regular water, as well as eat cool or soft foods, avoid smoking or smoky places, and get plenty of rest.

People can also try sucking ice cubes, ice lollies or hard sweets. Again, it states not to give to young children - this is because anything small and hard to suck brings with it a risk of choking.

Many treatments and solutions for tackling a sore throat can be bought at a pharmacy or in supermarkets. You should speak to a GP if your sore throat does not improve after a week, or if you often get a sore throat.
