Channel 4's The Windsors has recruited a former Time Lord from Doctor Who for its coronation episode.

The Radio Times reports the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison, has come on board the one-off special to play the ghost of King William IV complaining to Prince Wills (Fleabag's Hugh Skinner) about his notoriously paltry coronation.

"I'm very pleased to be asked to appear in the coronation special, even if I am only an apparition," Davison has said.

"After many years going from playing vets, to doctors, to policemen, to vicars, and then barristers, I can see I've now reached the 'ghost' phase of my career – this is not necessarily a good sign, but it was a joy to do it."

The coronation special, which airs this Sunday (April 30) on Channel 4, will have King Charles (Bad Education's Harry Enfield) and Queen Camilla (The Crown's Haydn Gwynne) planning a lavish coronation for the ages.

Charles faces some opposition from his son, Wills, over whether an extravagant public ceremony will fly in the face of the cost-of-living crisis.

Davison most recently reprised his role as the Fifth Doctor in last year's 'The Power of the Doctor' — alongside fellow Doctor actors Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann — as part of Jodie Whittaker's sendoff as the 13th Doctor.

He recently hinted he could be playing the Fifth Doctor on-screen again as his son-in-law David Tennant returns as the Fourteenth Doctor for Doctor Who's 60th anniversary.

"I was very envious of the special effects. We didn't have a lot – we're mainly down to green screen and rather cumbersome rubber monsters," he said of his recent cameo.

"It's a thrill to be a part of the digital age, but, at the same time, when David Tennant first took over as the Doctor in 2006, I went along to see the filming."

The Windsors airs on Channel 4 this Sunday (April 30) at 9pm.

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max. Classic Doctor Who streams on Britbox in the UK.
