It sounds as though the future of Doctor Who is secure, with rumblings that the show could continue for at least five more series.

The news came from a rather unexpected source, too.

BBC Worldwide and Shanghai Media Group (SMG) Pictures recently announced plans to bring the series – plus its spin-offs Torchwood and Class – to China for the first time later this year.

But contained within the release was this little nugget: "Chinese audiences will not only be able to see showrunners Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat's series 1-10, but also incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall's yet-to-film series 11.

"SMG Pictures has also optioned first-look rights for series 12-15."

To date, only series 11 of Doctor Who – the first to have Broadchurch creator Chibnall as series boss – has been officially confirmed by the BBC.

Now it appears at least four additional series are in the works (though it's unclear if Chibnall will be sticking around that long).

Of the deal to air Who and its sister series in China, Peter Capaldi said: "I've been lucky enough to witness first-hand how passionately Doctor Who has been embraced by people all over the world. So it's wonderful to know that fans in China will now have the chance to experience the full positive effect of having Doctor Who in their lives."

Capaldi will exit the show this Christmas, with a new Doctor taking the helm of the TARDIS for series 11 and beyond.

Happy times and places – with plenty more adventures in time and space to come...

Doctor Who continues this Saturday (May 27) at 7.45pm on BBC One.
