BBC America released the first trailer for Jodie Whittaker’s debut season of Doctor Who at San Diego Comic-Con. As the first female Doctor in the show’s 54-year history, Whittaker’s Doctor is breaking new ground and facing off against all-new threats alongside her brand-new cast of “friends,” Ryan, Yasmin, and Graham. Armed with a new sonic screwdriver, the 13th Doctor will have “a lot of energy and a lot of childish wonder,” Whittaker says.
“The year is the perfect jumping-on point for that person in your life who has never watched Doctor Who,” Chris Chibnall, the new showrunner, promises. “There is no barrier to entry this year. It’s a big mainstream-accessible series of 10 varied, exciting standalone stories. You won’t see very much from the past. Our job is, Where does the show go next. Less old stuff returning and more new treats.”
New does seem to be the operative word. Chibnall says we won’t even expect Dalek this season. And as to the interior of the TARDIS? We’re not sure the Doctor’s ship will even appear.
