River Song's timeline on Doctor Who is complicated, to say the least.

Despite seemingly meeting the Doctor for the first time in 2008's 'Silence in the Library', the mysterious time traveller actually has met/meets the Time Lord many more times.

It's confusing, no doubt, and it turns out the timeline is something that actress Alex Kingston never really bothered with.

"You never know, I mean who knows whether it's finished or not, we don't know," she said on Graham Norton's BBC Radio 2 show today (May 18).

"I never just bothered with the timeline, I just lived in the moment because that's all you can do on Doctor Who.

"You never know what's going to happen next, or where you're supposed to be going, or what you're supposed to be knowing. You just have to learn your lines and do it."

But if you do want to delve deeper into River Song's timeline, we have a handy explainer for you right here.

Earlier this year, Kingston suggested she would be interested in returning to Doctor Who, explaining that she talked to current Doctor Jodie Whittaker about the prospect.

"I did meet her. We chatted about me coming back to Doctor Who," she said. "I love the character, and I think that, my gosh, there are wonderful potential opportunities down the road. But it's not my decision."

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.
