The world lost an acting legend over the weekend with the sad passing of John Hurt; the BAFTA-winning actor appeared in everything from The Naked Civil Servant and I, Claudius to science fiction and fantasy fare like Hellboy, Alien, Merlin and - of course - Doctor Who.

Hurt starred as 'The War Doctor' in the show's 50th anniversary special alongside David Tennant and Matt Smith, more than holding his own against two of the most popular Time Lords.

Many stars have already paid tribute to the late icon, and now Smith has spoken about his time working with Hurt.

"He was amazing and one of the great actors that we've produced over in England," Smith told Variety at the red carpet of the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

"[It's] devastating news, really so sad. He was a wonderful man and a brilliant, brilliant actor."

When he asked if he was starstruck by his co-star, Smith replied: "Absolutely! I was like, 'Oh my God, John Hurt!' and then he turned out to be an absolute hero.

"And he'll be really, really sadly missed."
