You just can't keep a good Doctor Who companion down.

Bill Potts might've departed the TARDIS in series 10's epic finale, but Pearl Mackie will reprise the role for this year's Christmas special - Peter Capaldi's final outing as the Doctor.

But will this be Mackie's swansong, too? We know she's not returning to Doctor Who full-time next year, with a gang of new companions taking her place. But the actress is refusing to rule out a guest appearance in the future.

"[The Christmas special] is the last episode of Doctor Who I will ever do... maybe, I don't know!" she said last night at a screening of the festive episode, 'Twice Upon a Time'.

"If Chris is around, then give me a call - that's cool!"

Whether this is her final end or not, Mackie went on to insist that a Doctor Who veteran is "always part" of the series, "even if you're not necessarily in it" anymore.

"I still don't think I can really reflect on how impactful it has been - on my life, on my career, as yet. Because I still feel so close to it.

"It hasn't even aired yet, it's still very much part of my life and I think, talking to previous Doctors and companions, I think it's something that never really leaves you.

"It's something that always stays with you and will always be something that people ask about, because they're always very interested in it - understandably so, because it's really good.

"That's quite a special thing - it's something that always will be there, and something that you can always be in, even without [actually] being in it! It's sort of the reflected glory of future Doctor Whos and companions."

Doctor Who: Twice Upon a Time will air on BBC One on Christmas Day at 5.30pm.
