Dudley the five-month old labrador may have thought he could get away with the cheeky theft of a gardener’s hose, but the Dumfries Galloway Police Division had other ideas!

In a hilarious spoof Facebook post, the department claimed they had apprehended the pooch for “theft of hose, murder of tulips,” alongside a sorry looking mugshot of the puppy.

The police statement read: “You may recall on 17th September 2015, Police were informed of a theft and a subsequent ‘murder’ (theft of hose, murder of tulips). The Murder squad quickly recovered CCTV of the ‘perp’ in the act and circulated the suspect’s image to officers.

“You will be pleased to know, the murder squad followed up a number of 'leads’ and identified the suspect as a five-month-old yellow lab named Dudley.

“He was arrested in an early morning dawn raid and will be appearing at court tomorrow where it is expected he will be sent to the big dog house.”

The police then issued a damning screen grab of Dudley caught in the act with the hose in his mouth, alongside the original complaint from gardner Craig Johnston.

Mr Johnson reported a “theft and murder” claiming a “cretin in the night” had stolen his hose. With his hose not working, his prize tulips died as he was unable to water them.

News of Dudley’s ‘arrest’, which has already attracted more than 1,780 likes and 480 shares on the social networking site, was to mark the four year anniversary of the Dumfries and Galloway Police Facebook page, and has clearly gone down well with fans who left a slew of comments under the post.

Facebook user Jonathan Dempster wrote: “I hope an officer is going through the Puppies and Criminal Evidence Act, with Dudley? As his lawful defence, I submit Dudley was legally 'barking mad’ at time of the offence, and the court will note this is punishment enough, and request an order for Dudley be made to reside outside any big doghouse, instead having access to open fields, secure humane kennelling, and proper puppy care.“

“Terrible that he started on a life of crime so young but I’m sure this timely and efficient arrest will give him paws for though,” added Hilary Parke.

Facebooker Derek Young claimed it was “Circumstantial evidence at best. The cat done it,” while Steph Bally joined in the “free Dudley” campaign. “Dudley has been framed,” she wrote.
