Shame, guilt and regret.

That’s the look this mischievous mutt is wearing — after causing nearly £1,000 of damage eating his way though a door.

The cheeky German Shepherd cross immediately came to rue his decision — after becoming trapped in the hole he had created.

The dog, named Theo, was found like this by his owner Helene Plummer after she arrived home from work.

Plummer, 50, said: “I came home, and I always get into the house through the back door. As soon as I saw him there looking sorry for himself with his head sticking out I just thought, ‘my poor lad! My poor door!’

“I panicked and rushed to help him get out. I was really shocked. There was a little bit of blood on his neck from where he had forced himself through the door but he was fine,” she added.

“Those doors are made to be burglar-proof. Clearly they aren’t Theo-proof. That door is a good four-and-a-half centimetres thick. It’s the cat flap he’s got through originally, and he’s managed to chew all the way through.”

When Helene eventually got inside her kitchen after Theo chewed through the door she was greeted by an almighty mess with shards of wood scattered across the floor.

Thermal electronics assembler from Mossley, Greater Manchester, said the former rescue dog is normally the picture of calm.

But she believes the carnage occurred when Theo, who was still new to the family home, accidentally confined himself in the kitchen while she was out and panicked — resorting to chewing the cat flap in a desperate bid to escape.

Helene said: “It was carnage, bits of the door were over the floor. He’d had a good old go at it. I have no idea how long he’d been trapped in the kitchen for or how long it took him to get through the door.

“It’s not the biggest space, so he must have panicked like crazy and tried to get out of the kitchen somehow through the cat flap. I was out at work from 8am until 1pm, so he had plenty of time to get himself into trouble.

“He’d been fine after his operation, he’d had his stitches out and was wearing his cone. He must have managed to knock the kitchen door with his cone and shut himself in.”

Despite the destruction, Helene admits that recently neutered Theo’s antics were an impressive feat — especially due to him wearing a protective neck cone at the time.

Helene said: “He’s absolutely fine now, I don’t think he even remembers doing it at all, he’s forgotten all about it. He’s just a happy, loving little dog.

“We’ve had to board up the door though, and it looks like we might need to get it replaced.”
