The RSPCA has confirmed that an investigation is underway after a dog was found buried alive with a nail hammered into its skull.

The dog, which is believed to be a terrier mix, was discovered by a couple out walking, and was said to be whimpering in pain and terror with the nail embedded between its eyes.

A nearby workman helped retrieve the dog, who was miraculously still alive.

But while the animal was taken to a vet, nothing could be done to help save it, and it was put down to end its ‘immense suffering.’

Now, the RSPCA has launched an appeal to track down the people responsible for the barbaric act.

One of the walkers, who found the dog in Redcar, North Yorkshire, said: ‘How could anyone be that despicable and cruel to do something like that? Why not get it put to sleep if they didn’t want it? Are there no depths to which humans won’t sink?’

RSPCA inspector Nick Jones described the act as being the most sickening thing he had seen in 10 years of service.

‘In all my 10 years working for the RSPCA, I have never known anything so horrifying and inexplicably cruel’, he said.

‘This is clearly a very deliberate act of cruelty and it’s inconceivable to think why somebody has done it to this poor little dog.

‘It’s likely more than one person was involved in this act of horrific cruelty due to the force needed to inflict such an attack.

‘He is a white entire male, scruffy-looking terrier type with a curly coat, possibly a Jack Russell or West Highland Terrier crossbreed, and aged around seven years old.

‘I am urging anybody with any information no matter how small or who recognises this dog, to come forward and leave me a message in complete confidence on our inspector’s appeal line by calling 0300 123 8018.’
