A dog has been found dead in a Leicestershire canal. Investigations are underway, with the RSPCA believing it may have been in the water "for some time".

The female black terrier type dog was discovered by passers-by at the canal entrance close to Great Bowden Hall, near Market Harborough, on Thursday, January 23. The RSPCA, who are leading the investigation, said it is thought the dog had been in the water for a “number of days”.

A cause of death has not yet been established by a vet. The RSPCA said this is because the dog's body had been in the water "for some time”.

RSPCA Inspector Beckie Harlock said: “It must have been very upsetting for passers-by to discover the dog, and I’d like to say thank you to them for reporting this to us. We don’t know how the dog came to be in the water so if anyone recognises the description, or is currently searching for this dog, I’d ask them to contact me."

Anyone with information should call Inspector Harlock on 0300 123 8018, quoting incident number 01434009.
