Dog hauled from river in 3.50am rescue operation

Firefighters staged a rescue operation in the early hours after a dog 'jumped into a river'. But the pooch became stuck under a footbridge in Nantwich's River Weaver.

Engines from three stations - along with the 'rapid rescue unit' - were sent to the scene off Shrewbridge Road at around 3.50am this morning. And the heroic firefighters used a raft to get to the dog.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters were called to a report of a dog having jumped into a river in Nantwich and becoming stuck under a footbridge. Two firefighters trained in water rescue entered the river and used a raft to access the dog, which is thought to be a small terrier cross.

"After being brought to the river bank, the dog was handed to its owner and taken to a vet for precautionary checks."
