Dog Rescued From Floodwaters in Dominican Republic Following Tropical Storm Laura

Members of the Dominican Republic’s Defensa Civil were filmed rescuing a dog from floodwaters after Topical Storm Laura swept across the Caribbean towards Cuba on Sunday, August 23.

In this video, several people wearing the group’s orange livery can be seen wading through floodwaters with one of the men holding a dog by its front legs.

“They also deserve to be saved,” an Instagram post from the government organization said. A later post showed the dog with the caption: “The rescued dog is now our friend.”

Four people were reportedly killed in the Dominican Republic and several more died in neighboring Haiti due to the storm.

Local news reports said several buildings collapsed in the La Yuca, a neighborhood in the Los Rios area of Santo Domingo, the nation’s capital.

On Sunday, the National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Laura was nearing Cuba and warned the storm could bring “life-threatening flash flooding” to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, and Jamaica. Credit: Defensa Civil DR via Storyful
