It's a sure indication all is not right in a dog's world when any it decides it's not into the food in its bowl.

And so it proved with Star, a seven year old Jack Russell terrier. The reason? 80 stones and pebbles.

Tracy McCaul, 49, from Fleetwood, took Star to PDSA's Blackpool pet hospital where vets examined her belly and felt 'crunchy material'.

But the results of the X-Ray stunned Tracy. Dozens of stones lined Star's stomach which she had swallowed from the back garden.

PDSA senior vet, Jennifer Jackson said: "Star's condition was very worrying - she could hardly stand and was extremely dehydrated. On close examination, we could feel something in Star's stomach but when we saw the X-Rays we couldn't believe how many stones she had swallowed.

"The quantity of sharp stones passing through her intestines was damaging them and given the possibility of them piercing her intestines, there was a danger of her developing potentially fatal peritonitis."

The vets carried out emergency surgery and now Star is healthy once more.

And Tracy has made sure her pet will get more of her gravel fix - she has since removed all stones and rocks from her garden.
