A dog was rescued from icy waters after plunging into a Leicestershire country park lake. Bilbo the labrador was left stranded 30 metres from shore during the chilly incident earlier this month.

Bilbo had been in Melton Country Park when they plunged into the late on Friday, November 22. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) deployed a crew from its Melton Fire Station as well as a specialist Technical Rescue Team from Southern Fire Station to conduct the rescue mission.

In a statement, LFRS said its crews used an inflatable rescue sled to reach the stranded dog before bringing it safely back to shore. Bilbo was reportedly very cold but otherwise unharmed in the incident.

Vets also checked over the cold pet pooch and confirmed that Bilbo had made a full recovery. Alongside his owner, Bilbo reunited up with his Southern Fire Station rescuers this week as a way to say thank you. He also met Fire Control Operator Beth who took the initial 999 call.

While it was a lucky escape and a happy ending for Bilbo, LFRS has issued a warning to all dog owners as conditions get colder throughout winter. A spokesperson said: "Although the water and ice may look inviting, in cold weather it is extremely dangerous. Please ensure when out walking near water or ice, please keep your dog on the lead."
