Domhnall Gleeson has been immortalised as one of the most notorious villains in the Star Wars franchise, but the actor is now admitting that he considered turning down the role.

The 34-year-old Irish actor returns for his second outing in Star Wars: The Last Jedi as General Hux, Kylo Ren's double-dealing arch-nemesis within the First Order's high command.

Yet, Domhnall revealed on The One Show on Wednesday (December 13) that his early brush with fandom playing Bill Weasley in the Harry Potter film made him think twice about working on Star Wars.

"I think everybody is [unsure], really," he admitted. "It's not like I didn't want to be in it. I wanted to do the job, but I was a little bit concerned about the impact it would have on my life.

"I'd already been in Harry Potter a tiny bit, right at the end of that, and things changed a little bit in terms of being out and about.

"So, I was a little bit reticent [for The Force Awakens], but then I read it and I was really good. I just decided I didn't care anymore."

His candid comments come on the same day as Daisy Ridley acknowledged on Lorraine that she had her own concerns about playing Rey again in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

"I didn't feel as comfortable going into it because the first one had just come out and it was nuts," she explained to host Lorraine Kelly. "I was like, 'Ah I don't know how to do this again!' Like I don't know what I did first time round.

"But I think that by the end of it, I was like now I have a sense of her, which was great. Right at the end of it."

Luckily for Daisy, and for Domhnall too, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is getting very positive reviews from critics and fans alike… aside from a few minor complaints.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in cinemas across the UK tomorrow (December 14) and in the US on Friday (December 15). Watch director Rian Johnson chat with Digital Spy below:
