A souvenir wedding cake from US President Donald Trump's marriage to Melania fetched $2,240 (£1,695) at auction.

The miniature chocolate truffle cake, which features a single white frosting rose, was given out as a wedding favour to be taken home by guests at the 2005 celebration in Palm Beach, Florida.

The confection fetched more than anticipated, with Julien’s Auctions projecting that the piece would sell for between $1,000 (£850) and $2,000 (£1,695).

The treat came housed in a white paper box monogrammed with the initials M D T.

The actual seven-tier wedding cake reportedly cost around $50,000 (£37,830), according to the auction house, and was not actually eaten by wedding guests due to the amount of wire used to make it stand.

The miniature sweet is not the first piece of Trump memorabilia to go up for auction.

Last month, a sketch the President drew of the New York City skyline sold at an auction for $6,875.

The hand-drawn and signed sketch created with a gold marker also came with a signed photo of Mr Trump, which also had “Think big” scrawled across it.
