Some called it a "dark omen" and "beyond iconic", while others took simple delight at the unfortunate juxtaposition when Donald Trump was "pictured next to" Darth Vader on board Air Force One.
The US president came to speak to reporters on the presidential plane while they were watching the Star Wars film, Rogue One.
As Mr Trump answered questions in the cabin, the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Forces appeared on screen.
The US president was discussing the Syria crisis amid reports he is being briefed by officials on military options to intervene in the six-year civil war.
“Reporters forgot to turn off Star Wars: Rogue One before @POTUS came back to visit the press cabin,” ABC reporter Alex Mallin tweeted.
Sean Spicer, Mr Trump's press secretary, was photographed during a Stormtroopers scene.
