Donald Trump blasts ‘biggest witch hunt of a politician’ in US history

Donald Trump is no stranger to making his feelings known when he logs on to Twitter, and today is no exception.

The President decided to lash out at his detractors as soon as he woke up this morning, attacking what he sees as a “witch hunt” against him.

He angrily tweeted: “This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!”

Trump was reacting to the decision by the US Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to oversee the investigation into alleged Russian influence in the 2016 election.

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller was appointed to serve as a special prosecutor on the case after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

Comey had been leading the investigation into Russia’s role in the election until his sacking last week.

Trump seemed furious about the decision, tweeting: “With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign and Obama Administration, there was never a special counsel appointed!”

Trump has always denied any connection with Russia and quickly put out a statement following the appointment of Mueller.

He said: “As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know – there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity.

“I look forward to this matter concluding quickly.

“In the meantime, I will never stop fighting for the people and the issues that matter most to the future of our country.”

The White House also put out a statement yesterday that denied claims Trump had put pressure on Comey to drop his investigation into Michael Flynn.

The former national security adviser resigned from his post earlier this year when he was found to have lied to Vice President Mike Pence over his dealings with Russia.
