Donald Trump has called his impeachment trial the "most unfair and corrupt hearing in Congressional history" in a fresh Twitter rant.

As the third impeachment trial in US history continued on Thursday , the US President took to social media to deliver his thoughts on the historic proceedings and attack lead prosecutor Adam Schiff.

After apparently tweeting out quotes from a series of guests who had appeared on Fox News, Mr Trump then wrote: “The Democrat House would not give us lawyers, or not one witness, but now demand that the Republican Senate produce the witnesses that the House never sought, or even asked for?

“They had their chance, but pretended to rush. Most unfair & corrupt hearing in Congressional history!”

He continued: “No matter what you give to the Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats, it will never be enough!”

He finished by calling the proceedings a “witch hunt,” writing: “The Democrats & Shifty Schiff, whose presentation to the Senate was loaded with lies and misrepresentations, are refusing to state that the Obama Administration withheld aid from many countries including Ukraine, Pakistan, Philippines, Egypt, Honduras, & Mexico. Witch Hunt!”

His comments come after the Democrats lost a series of battles on the first day of the trial on Tuesday, with Republicans voting down attempts to subpoena a cache of documents and witness evidence.

Senators voted along party lines, 53-47, to block a series of motions from Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.

The dramatic showdown saw his bid to subpoena records and documents from the White House, the State Department and the Office of Management and Budget related to Mr Trump's dealings with Ukraine, fail in the Senate.

Mr Schiff, who helped spearhead the House impeachment inquiry, summarised the charges against Mr Trump on Tuesday and said the president had committed "constitutional misconduct justifying impeachment."

Mr Schiff said that although the evidence against Mr Trump was "already overwhelming," further witness testimony was necessary to show the full scope of the misconduct by the president and those around him.

Democrats have called on the Senate to remove President Trump from office for pressuring Ukraine to investigate former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden, a political rival, and then impeding the inquiry into the matter.

Mr Trump, who was impeached last month by the Democratic-led House of Representatives on charges of abusing power and obstructing Congress, denies any wrongdoing and describes his impeachment as a partisan hoax to derail his 2020 re-election effort.
