Donald Trump reportedly fears that he will appear ‘weak’ if he publicly gives in to growing pressure over his divisive immigration policies that have seen young children being separated from their families.

The US President is facing intense criticism after it emerged that young children are being held in former warehouses after their parents were detained as illegal immigrants.

But according to Axios, Trump ‘doesn’t want to look weak’ by backing down.

The news site claims that Trump was shown harrowing images from the site by daughter Ivanka, but he maintains that any solution should be taken by Congress.

Addressing the criticism yesterday, Mr Trump said: ‘As a result of Democrat funded loopholes, most illegal immigrant families and minors from Central America cannot be detained together or removed together. Only released.

‘These are crippling loopholes which cause family separation, which we don’t want.’

Posting on Twitter today, he once more attacked the Democrat Party.

‘The Fake News is not mentioning the safety and security of our Country when talking about illegal immigration’, he wrote.

‘Our immigration laws are the weakest and worst anywhere in the world, and the Dems will do anything not to change them & to obstruct-want open borders which means crime.’

He added: ‘It’s the Democrats fault, they won’t give us the votes needed to pass good immigration legislation. They want open borders, which breeds horrible crime. Republicans want security. But I am working on something – it never ends!’

Mr Trump is yet to directly address the harrowing scenes from within the Texas detention centres, after footage captured children calling out for their parents while being held within cages.
