Former United States president Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against New York Attorney General Letitia James.

The lawsuit has been filed in a federal court in Syracuse, New York, first reported by The New York Times, as an attempt from Mr Trump to block Ms James' civil fraud probe into his business.

The attorney general's office is investigating whether the Trump Organization manipulated the valuation of its real estate properties.

In the lawsuit, Mr Trump alleges that Ms James has violated their rights under the constitution, by pursuing a politically motivated investigation.

"By filing this lawsuit, we intend to not only hold her accountable for her blatant constitutional violations but to stop her bitter crusade to punish her political opponent in its tracks," Mr Trump's lawyer, Alina Habba, said.

In May, a spokesperson for Ms James said: "We have informed The Trump Organization that our investigation into the organisation is no longer purely civil in nature.

"We are now actively investigating The Trump Organization in a criminal capacity."

The inquiry led by Ms James - a Democrat - has previously been branded a "witch hunt" by the Republican former president.

Why is Trump under investigation?

Ms James has been looking into whether The Trump Organization falsely reported property values to get loans and receive tax and economic benefits.

This included claims of inflating the value of some assets to secure higher lending, and undervaluing other properties in order to get tax breaks.

Among the properties being queried are Mr Trump's estate north of Manhattan, an office building in New York City, a hotel in Chicago and a golf course in Los Angeles.

A separate investigation being carried out by Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance - also a Democrat - is looking into Mr Trump's business dealings from before he was elected to the White House.

Ms James' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
