Donald Trump gets roasted at correspondents' dinner by comedian Hasan Minhaj - despite being no-show

Hosts of the White House Correspondent’s Dinner mercilessly mocked Donald Trump – despite him being a no-show.

Mr Trump became the first President to skip the media dinner since 1981 when former President Ronald Reagan was recovering from an attempted assignation.

It has been suggested that he was not keen on attending following the roasting he received from President Obama in 2016.

But he assured supporters that he "couldn't possibly be more thrilled" to be avoiding the "very boring" event.

Traditionally, the President will mock the media in an introductory speech. But, in light of his absence, centre-stage was taken by comedian Hasan Minhaj.

Despite the President’s reluctance to attend – or, as Minhaj put it, the “elephant not in the room” – he did not hold back from making a mockery of his leadership.

"I get why Donald Trump didn't want to be roasted tonight. By the looks of him, he's been roasting non-stop for the last 70 years," he said.

He also joked that the real American president was Russian leader Vladimir Putin and pointed fun at Kellyanne Conway.

He said: "The news coming out of the White House is so stressful, I've been watching 'House of Cards' just to relax."

And addressing the journalists in the room, he added: "In the age of Trump, I know that you guys have to be more perfect than ever.

“Because you are how the president gets his news […] You can't make any mistakes, because when one of you messes up, he blames your entire group. And now you know what it feels like to be a minority."
