On Wednesday evening, in a historic moment in American politics, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach president Donald Trump.

Two articles of impeachment were approved by the House, abuse of power and obstructing Congress, based on Trump engaging with Ukraine to investigate Democratic rivals ahead of the 2020 election.

“It is a matter of fact that the president is an ongoing threat to our national security,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

The vote was evidently split between Democratic and Republican parties. The House approved the abuse of power article of impeachment by a vote of 230 to 197, with no Republicans voting in favour. The second article, charging obstruction of Congress, passed by a vote of 229 to 198, again with no Republican support.

Now, the Republican-majority Senate will hold a trial to decide whether Trump is guilty of the two articles of impeachment and is required to leave office.

Trump is the third sitting U.S. president to be impeached. Andrew Johnson was impeached in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998, but both served out their terms at president.

Since the vote, people around the world have taken to social media to share their thoughts on Trump’s impeachment.
